Francesca Curmi is a Maltese professional tennis player and the top female player of the country. She has a career highest ranking of world’s No 104, achieved on September 26, 2021. She has won 8 ITF titles and one WTA Challenger title.

Francesca Curmi was born on July 7, 2002 in Malta. On the ITF Junior Circuit, she has a career-high combined ranking of 64. As junior, she won the titles at the Memorial Antonio Luzio Vaz in 2013, Perm Cup and Balashikha Open in 2014, but also was the runner-up at the J4 Samara \ Samara Cup, NBU Cup, and ENSANA Piestany Cup U14 in 2015. In 2016, she won the J100 Girls tennis tournament NBU Cup and was the runner-up at the J100 Girls tennis tournament J3 Almetievsk \ Almetievsk Cup, while in the next season she won the titles at the Slovak Junior Indoor U18 and J300 Prague West \ RPM Junior Vestec Open. Francesca Curmi participated in 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. At the Junior Grad Slam, she played at the US Open, French Open / Roland Garros, Wimbledon in 2017 and 2018, as well as Australian Open in 2018.

Francesca Curmi started her professional career in 2016 at the $10,000 W15 Shymkent (Kazakhstan), but lost in the first round. During the next season, she played at some more ITF Circuit events – $25,000 W25 Khimki (Russia), $15,000 W15 Moscow (Russia), $15,000 Helsinki (Finland), and $15,000 W15 Antalya (Turkey), but again losing in the first round at all of them.

In 2018, Francesca Curmi continue playing at the ITF Circuit, reaching the quarter-finals of the $15,000 W15 Moscow (Russia), as well as the second round of the $15,000 W15 Kazan (Russia), $15,000 W15 Antalya (Turkey), $25,000 W25 Fergana (Uzbekistan), and $15,000 W15 Shymkent (Kazakhstan). At the end of the season, she played her first ITF Circuit semi at the $15,000 W15 Antalya (Turkey).

Francesca Curmi won her first ITF title in 2019, triumphing at the $15,000 W15 Shymkent (Kazakhstan). By the end of the season she won also the title sat the $25,000 W25 Andijan (Uzbekistan), $25,000 W25 Fergana (Uzbekistan), and $35,000 W35 Istanbul (Turkey), but also was the runner-up at the $25,000 W25+H Penza (Uzbekistan). At the end of the season, she debuted at the WTA Tour main draw at the WTA 250 Baltic Open, losing in the first round, and the WTA Challenger Tour, reaching the second round of the WTA 125 Taipei OEC Open.

In 2020, Francesca Curmi continue gaining experience in the ITF Circuit, reaching the final at the $25,000 W25 Moscow (Russia). In September, she debuted in the Grand Slam main draw, playing in the second round of the French Open / Roland Garros and losing to Maria Sakkari.

In 2021, Francesca Curmi played entirely at the WTA Tour, but lost in the first round of the WTA 500 Yarra Valley Classic, WTA 250 Phillip Island Trophy, and WTA 250 TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championship Istanbul, and reaching the second round of WTA 500 St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy. She returned at the ITF Circuit to reach the final at the $60,000 W75 Zagreb (Croatia), before reaching the second round of the WTA 250 Serbia Ladies Open and WTA 250 Ladies Open Lausanne. Francesca Curmi made a real breakthrough at the US Open, reaching the third round, climbing to her career-highest position in the WTA ranking.

At the start of the 2022 season, Francesca Curmi kept the pace in her play and reached the third round of the WTA 250 Melbourne Summer Set II and the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Copa Colsanitas presented by Zurich. After that her form dropped and she did not overcome the first round of the next tournaments, although qualifying again for the main draw of the French Open / Roland Garros. During the Summer, she returned to eht ITF Circuit and won the titles at the $60,000 W60 Bronx, NY (USA) and later at the $60,000 W60 Nantes (France), but also reached the semi-finals at the WTA 125 Open Capfinances Rouen Metropole.

In 2023, Francesca Curmi lost in the first round of the Australian Open, but later won the title at the $60,000 W60+H Irapuato (Mexico), played in the second round of the WTA 250 Abierto GNP Seguros and WTA 125 San Luis Potosi Open, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Copa Colsanitas presented by Zurich. In May, she played in the main draw of the WTA 1000 Rome Open, but again lost in the first round, and later reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 Trophee Clarins, the second round of the WTA 250 Grand Prix Sar La Princesse Lalla Meryem, as well as the third round of the French Open / Roland Garros. She lost in the first rounds of the Wimbledon, WTA 250 Hungarian Grand Prix, and WTA 250 Hamburg European Open, while in August she played her first WTA Challenger final at the WTA 125 Golden Gate Open at Stanford, but lost to Yafan Wang (China) in straight sets. Later she played in the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 WTA Chicago Women’s Open and the semi-finals of the WTA 125 Abierto Tampico.

Francesca Curmi won her first WTA Challenger title in 2024, triumphing at the WTA 125 Guadalajara 125 Open. Meanwhile, she played in the second round of the Australian Open, the semi-finals at the WTA 250 Copa Colsanitas presented by Zurich and WTA 250 Grand Prix Sar La Princesse Lalla Meryem, as well as the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Guadalajara Open Akron, WTA 250 Jiangxi Open, WTA 125 Parma Ladies Open and WTA 125 Veneto Open promoted by Regione del Veneto.
